Ten lessons on Parcoursup, DAP and Etudes en France: choosing the right route and finishing each stage.
An original, free introductory application guide. It is not an official portal manual, university course, admission service, immigration opinion or personalised credential assessment. Check the rules for your nationality, residence, qualification, programme and intake. This is one country guide, not a claim that every applicant uses one universal system.
No prior application experience. Have an intended degree level and intake in mind; use official programme pages to resolve your own requirements.

1. France has a route matrix, not one universal portal
Learning goal: Use nationality, residence, diploma and programme type to identify the application route.
Parcoursup is France's national pre-registration platform for first-year higher education, but it is not the only route for every international applicant. The higher education ministry's matrix distinguishes nationality, residence, the school-leaving diploma and the kind of study sought. Etudes en France applies to covered residence countries and particular applicant situations. A passport alone is not enough to select the process.
Write a four-part profile before choosing a portal: nationality, actual country of residence, exact diploma and intended programme category and level. Compare it with the official matrix and the institution's instructions. This course focuses on first-year applications and the relationship between Parcoursup, DAP and Etudes en France. Master's and doctoral routes are boundaries to check separately, not reasons to force a later-year application into Parcoursup.
Source basis: F1; F2; F3. The case below and all exercises are original teaching material, not official questions. Deadlines and rules must be rechecked for the intake year.
Worked example
Original teaching example: An invented non-EU applicant living outside France with a foreign school diploma assumes every first-year course uses Parcoursup.
Name the evidence: An invented non-EU applicant living outside France with a foreign school diploma assumes every first-year course uses Parcoursup.
Separate the stated evidence from this assumption: Choose Parcoursup solely because the course is first year.
First year is only one dimension; nationality, residence, diploma and programme type also matter.
Next action: Use the ministry matrix for the applicant and the programme category.
Practice problem and solution
New checking task: You know nationality, residence, diploma and course type. Which official comparison tool should you use to choose the process?
Use the route matrix, matching both the applicant row and programme column.
Mental model: First year is only one dimension; nationality, residence, diploma and programme type also matter.
Common trap: Choose Parcoursup solely because the course is first year.
2. A French or European bac is a precise category
Learning goal: Distinguish the European Baccalaureate from a diploma merely earned in Europe.
The ministry explains that the European Baccalaureate is the diploma issued by the approved European Schools. It is not a casual label for every European school qualification, and the International Baccalaureate is a separate category in the route matrix. Applicants holding or preparing the French or European bac use Parcoursup for first-year entry under the cited rules, with further Etudes en France steps potentially relevant to the applicant's situation.
Copy the official diploma name from your evidence. Do not translate a geographical description into a qualification type. For a non-EU applicant with another diploma, first-year licence and selective programmes may use different routes. An incorrect label at the start can put every later task in the wrong system. Use the full matrix rather than one paragraph detached from the applicant category it describes.
Source basis: F1; F2. The case below and all exercises are original teaching material, not official questions. Deadlines and rules must be rechecked for the intake year.
Worked example
Original teaching example: A fictional applicant holds an IB diploma from a school in Europe and calls it the European Baccalaureate.
Name the evidence: A fictional applicant holds an IB diploma from a school in Europe and calls it the European Baccalaureate.
Separate the stated evidence from this assumption: Treat a school's European location as proof of the European Baccalaureate.
The diploma category is defined by the qualification, not the continent of the school.
Next action: Use the IB category and verify the applicant's route.
Practice problem and solution
New checking task: The International Baccalaureate was earned at a school in Europe. Which diploma category should be used, not European Baccalaureate?
Use IB; geography does not change the qualification.
Mental model: The diploma category is defined by the qualification, not the continent of the school.
Common trap: Treat a school's European location as proof of the European Baccalaureate.
3. First-year licence: check DAP before making choices
Learning goal: Identify when a preliminary admission request belongs in the route.
For the non-EU applicant categories in the ministry matrix, a foreign school-leaving diploma can lead to a Demande d'Admission Prealable, or DAP, for first-year licence entry. Where Etudes en France applies, the matrix places DAP within that procedure; other situations can require a different DAP route. The matrix also distinguishes selective non-university programmes and selective university programmes. Do not turn the DAP rule into a rule for every French course.
Read the row and the column together. Then check the institution and the local Campus France office for the current campaign and any exception relevant to you. This guide deliberately provides no reusable DAP closing date. The current English Campus France page contains an internally inconsistent year in its DAP calendar. Do not silently fix that year and publish it as fact; obtain a clear intake-specific date from the responsible official source.
Source basis: F1; F2. The case below and all exercises are original teaching material, not official questions. Deadlines and rules must be rechecked for the intake year.
Worked example
Original teaching example: An invented non-EU applicant residing in an Etudes en France country with a foreign diploma seeks a first-year university licence under the relevant matrix row.
Name the evidence: An invented non-EU applicant residing in an Etudes en France country with a foreign diploma seeks a first-year university licence under the relevant matrix row.
Separate the stated evidence from this assumption: Use a selective non-university course's Parcoursup route for the licence.
The programme column changes the route even when the applicant profile stays fixed.
Next action: Check the DAP through Etudes en France route and any applicable exceptions.
Practice problem and solution
New checking task: In the specified ministry matrix row, a first-year licence requires a preliminary admission request. What is its abbreviation?
DAP is the preliminary admission request; confirm the applicable procedure and exceptions.
Mental model: The programme column changes the route even when the applicant profile stays fixed.
Common trap: Use a selective non-university course's Parcoursup route for the licence.
4. Etudes en France depends on residence and purpose
Learning goal: Find the responsible local office and the correct stage of the process.
Campus France describes Etudes en France as an online file and communication process covering enrolment procedures up to the visa request for affected residence countries and territories. The platform allows applicants to submit applications and communicate with the local office and institutions. Its assistance can involve a fee. Free reading sources do not mean that the real application or visa workflow is free.
Check the current country coverage and your own situation rather than copying another person's portal route. The ministry matrix and Campus France do not replace the chosen institution's instructions. If citizenship and residence differ, that is a reason to consult the applicable matrix row and local office, not a reason to pretend they are the same. Some applicants need both Parcoursup choices and Etudes en France steps. Two required processes are not automatically duplicate applications.
Source basis: F1; F2. The case below and all exercises are original teaching material, not official questions. Deadlines and rules must be rechecked for the intake year.
Worked example
Original teaching example: A fictional applicant's citizenship differs from their current residence. They choose a local office using only the passport country.
Name the evidence: A fictional applicant's citizenship differs from their current residence. They choose a local office using only the passport country.
Separate the stated evidence from this assumption: Ignore residence because citizenship is the only relevant variable.
Etudes en France guidance expressly uses residence; nationality remains a separate route variable.
Next action: Check the residence-based procedure and confirm the applicable local instructions.
Practice problem and solution
New checking task: You are choosing the local Etudes en France process. Which location fact must be checked separately from citizenship?
Residence is a separate route variable.
Mental model: Etudes en France guidance expressly uses residence; nationality remains a separate route variable.
Common trap: Ignore residence because citizenship is the only relevant variable.
5. Read the programme fiche as an evidence request
Learning goal: Extract the course criteria and requested materials instead of writing a generic application.
Parcoursup's programme fiches describe content, expectations and the way applications are examined. Use them to test whether your academic preparation fits the course and to find what evidence is actually requested. Motivation material is not a universal essay with one national word count to reuse everywhere. The official FAQ describes motivation letters where the formation asks for them. Requirements differ, so inspect each dossier.
Make a brief for each choice: expected preparation, requested evidence, selection tasks and unresolved questions. Explain your real experience with concrete links to the programme rather than invented achievements. That writing method is editorial advice, not an official scoring formula. Do not convert historical access figures into a personal probability of admission. The programme fiche describes a course and previous outcomes, not a guaranteed result for you.
Source basis: F4; F3. The case below and all exercises are original teaching material, not official questions. Deadlines and rules must be rechecked for the intake year.
Worked example
Original teaching example: A fictional student copies one motivation paragraph to every course without reading whether it is requested or what each course expects.
Name the evidence: A fictional student copies one motivation paragraph to every course without reading whether it is requested or what each course expects.
Separate the stated evidence from this assumption: Assume every choice uses an identical national essay requirement.
The application evidence depends on the formation, not an imagined universal essay.
Next action: Read the fiche and tailor truthful evidence to its actual requests.
Practice problem and solution
New checking task: You need course expectations and requested application material on Parcoursup. Which programme document should you read?
The programme fiche provides course-specific information.
Mental model: The application evidence depends on the formation, not an imagined universal essay.
Common trap: Assume every choice uses an identical national essay requirement.
6. Choices and sub-choices have different counters
Learning goal: Use the current rules without importing another applicant category's allowance.
The current general Parcoursup FAQ describes up to ten non-apprenticeship choices, with multiple-choice and sub-choice rules for particular formations. The international FAQ includes additional category-specific restrictions for some applicants abroad with foreign diplomas. Apprenticeship has separate issues for certain first-time international arrivals. Do not assume that the headline number alone describes your whole allowance.
Use the current dossier counters and the guidance for both your applicant category and each formation type. Initial choices and later waiting-list retention are also different stages: the initial choice list is not a prediction of the order in which offers will arrive. This course does not reproduce every cap, exception or yearly waiting-list instruction. It teaches you to find the governing rule before adding or retaining choices. Recheck it for the campaign you actually enter.
Source basis: F3; F4. The case below and all exercises are original teaching material, not official questions. Deadlines and rules must be rechecked for the intake year.
Worked example
Original teaching example: A fictional applicant uses the general choice limit while ignoring a specific formation-category restriction listed for their international profile.
Name the evidence: A fictional applicant uses the general choice limit while ignoring a specific formation-category restriction listed for their international profile.
Separate the stated evidence from this assumption: Treat the headline limit as permission for every combination.
A general cap does not erase a more specific category rule.
Next action: Check the specific category rules and dossier counter before adding the choice.
Practice problem and solution
New checking task: You are uncertain whether a sub-choice exceeds a current allowance. Which dossier tool should you inspect alongside the rules?
The counter helps track choices, but you must also apply category-specific rules.
Mental model: A general cap does not erase a more specific category rule.
Common trap: Treat the headline limit as permission for every combination.
7. Saved is not confirmed
Learning goal: Separate choosing, completing the dossier and confirming each choice.
Parcoursup distinguishes the period for formulating choices from the later step of completing the dossier and confirming them. In the retrieved current campaign guidance, those actions have separate deadlines. A choice saved in the list is not a substitute for completing the requested material and confirming it. Check the status of each choice, not merely whether a course name appears in your account.
Build a two-stage submission check: first verify the choices you intend to request; then verify completion and confirmation through the current interface. Record the campaign year and official calendar. Do not reuse dates from a prior-year FAQ, search result or screenshot. If the page banner and the campaign content refer to different years, resolve the date from the current official calendar and dossier rather than assuming the newest-looking text is accurate.
Source basis: F4; F6. The case below and all exercises are original teaching material, not official questions. Deadlines and rules must be rechecked for the intake year.
Worked example
Original teaching example: A fictional applicant saves a course choice, but its dossier status says it still needs confirmation and required material.
Name the evidence: A fictional applicant saves a course choice, but its dossier status says it still needs confirmation and required material.
Separate the stated evidence from this assumption: Count the saved course name as a confirmed application.
Saving a preference and confirming a complete choice are separate actions.
Next action: Complete the dossier and confirm the choice before the applicable deadline.
Practice problem and solution
New checking task: A choice is saved and its materials are complete, but the required final choice action is not done. What is missing?
Confirmation is distinct from saving and completing the dossier.
Mental model: Saving a preference and confirming a complete choice are separate actions.
Common trap: Count the saved course name as a confirmed application.
8. A waiting place is not an offer
Learning goal: Interpret yes, yes-if and waiting responses without changing their meaning.
Parcoursup distinguishes an admission offer from a waiting-list status. Its FAQ explains that a waiting candidate does not yet have an offer. For relevant non-selective programmes, oui-si means an offer with an adapted support or preparation pathway; it is not merely a waitlist label. Read the details of that pathway before treating the offer as the same as an unconditional yes.
The official guidance displays response deadlines in the dossier. Missing the applicable deadline can lose an offer. This course does not turn the current campaign's response intervals into a permanent rule. Read the actual date and current retention instructions, including any required action for waiting choices. Alerts can help you notice a change, but the dossier's status and instructions determine what must be done.
Source basis: F5. The case below and all exercises are original teaching material, not official questions. Deadlines and rules must be rechecked for the intake year.
Worked example
Original teaching example: A fictional dossier shows en attente for the preferred choice and oui-si for another. The applicant calls both unconditional admission.
Name the evidence: A fictional dossier shows en attente for the preferred choice and oui-si for another. The applicant calls both unconditional admission.
Separate the stated evidence from this assumption: Treat every positive-looking status as unconditional admission.
Waiting is not an offer, and oui-si carries a described pathway.
Next action: Distinguish the waitlist from the offer and read the oui-si pathway and response deadline.
Practice problem and solution
New checking task: The dossier says en attente. What does that describe rather than an offer?
Waiting describes a status without a current admission offer.
Mental model: Waiting is not an offer, and oui-si carries a described pathway.
Common trap: Treat every positive-looking status as unconditional admission.
9. Acceptance does not enrol you or issue a visa
Learning goal: Identify the tasks after an offer is accepted.
Parcoursup's guidance says that after a final choice you must follow the formation's administrative enrolment instructions. Acceptance in the platform is not the same as inscription administrative. The international FAQ notes that institutions may ask for original documents and other evidence at that stage. Follow what your institution actually requests, rather than assuming that application uploads settle every later verification.
Etudes en France covers steps up to the visa request for applicable applicants, but this guide does not decide visa eligibility or grant immigration permission. Keep the admission response, administrative enrolment and immigration workflow as separate rows. Read conditions in the institution's notice and the relevant official visa instructions before making travel commitments. A portal result cannot stand in for another authority's decision.
Source basis: F5; F2; F3. The case below and all exercises are original teaching material, not official questions. Deadlines and rules must be rechecked for the intake year.
Worked example
Original teaching example: A fictional applicant accepts a Parcoursup offer but has not completed the institution's administrative enrolment instructions.
Name the evidence: A fictional applicant accepts a Parcoursup offer but has not completed the institution's administrative enrolment instructions.
Separate the stated evidence from this assumption: Treat the accepted offer as completed enrolment and permission to travel.
An offer response, institutional enrolment and immigration permission are different states.
Next action: Follow the enrolment instructions and separately check any visa process.
Practice problem and solution
New checking task: You accepted a final offer. What institutional process remains, separate from any visa route?
Administrative enrolment remains under the formation's instructions.
Mental model: An offer response, institutional enrolment and immigration permission are different states.
Common trap: Treat the accepted offer as completed enrolment and permission to travel.
10. Audit both systems and every yearly date
Learning goal: Create a closing route-and-evidence sheet with unresolved issues visible.
For a France application, the final audit starts by checking that the original route was correct. Name the applicant profile and programme category, then list the tasks required in Parcoursup, DAP, Etudes en France and the institution where applicable. A completed step in one system does not prove a required step in another. If you do not know whether a second process applies, state that uncertainty and resolve it with the responsible official office.
Annual dates deserve a separate audit. The retrieved sources contain mixed calendar years, and Campus France's English DAP dates are internally inconsistent. The ministry and Campus France also differ in some country-list text. Do not infer a new eligibility rule or repair a closing date yourself. Confirm the current local procedure and intake calendar. An honest summary identifies completed evidence, pending decisions and unresolved instructions without offering an admission or visa guarantee.
Source basis: F1; F2; F4; F5; F6. The case below and all exercises are original teaching material, not official questions. Deadlines and rules must be rechecked for the intake year.
Worked example
Original teaching example: A fictional status report says complete because Parcoursup is confirmed, but the route sheet lists an applicable Etudes en France step not yet checked.
Name the evidence: A fictional status report says complete because Parcoursup is confirmed, but the route sheet lists an applicable Etudes en France step not yet checked.
Separate the stated evidence from this assumption: Delete the second process from the report because one portal is complete.
An audit must retain required work that has no completion evidence.
Next action: Reconcile both required processes and mark the unchecked step unresolved.
Practice problem and solution
New checking task: A potentially required second-portal step has never been checked. What status should its audit row show?
Unresolved is accurate until the applicability and completion are established.
Mental model: An audit must retain required work that has no completion evidence.
Common trap: Delete the second process from the report because one portal is complete.
